In Our Corner – April 24, 2008

Hilary Fenske

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month.  Sexual assault can happen to anyone.  It is more likely that a person will be sexually assaulted by someone they know (i.e. A coworker, friend, relative, etc) rather than by a stranger.  Sexual assault by an acquaintance is so devastating, because there has been a betrayal of trust.

Sexual assault is any unwanted act of sexual nature imposed by one person upon another.  This can range from unwanted touching to kissing to rape.  There does not have to be any sign of physical injury for criminal charges to be pressed.

If you have or think you have been sexually assaulted tell someone you know and trust or confidentially contact the Missouri Shores hotline.  Even if you choose not to press charges on the assailant, it is important to confide in someone.

If someone you know was sexually assaulted, urge them to talk about it; if not with a trained professional then with a trusted friend.  There is professional counseling available to victims.  If there was sexual contact, urge them to seek medical attention to protect themselves from STD’s and/or pregnancy.  Talk with them about going, or even go with them.  The main things to remember are to let them know you believe them, listen to them, and be supportive.
